Your transmission is in need of a repair and you don't know how to buy a used transmission? If you want to save money on a transmission repair you have a few options to consider. Now-a-days who does not want to save their hard earned money? Some of the options to consider are how much of the effort you want to do yourself? If you want you can save a lot of money when you know what steps to take and which ones to take first. If you follow some simple steps, you should be well on your way to getting your transmission fixed faster and save some yourself some money at the same time. • Use the old tried and true telephone. You can still do a lot of research using the telephone. Next in that line is use the computer. It seems you can't do too much without using one anyway so let it do some of the work for you. Simply type in the keyword 'used transmission' and you will generally find what you are looking for. Make sure you have the make, model, year and the engine size of your car or truck available to make it easy and quick to find one. Local salvage yards are probably your best bet, but many of them will ship it directly to you or wherever you are having the work done so keep that in mind too. So if you have not decided on who is going to do the work on putting in your transmission you may want to get that nailed down as well. • Contact the business and ask if the business has your type of transmissions available and ready for sale. Ask if it is a used, rebuilt, new or potentially salvaged transmission (it can make a difference in quality and price). If you have not already chosen a transmission shop or garage to do the work and the salvage yard is local or close by you may want to ask them if they will also take out the old and install the new 'used' transmission for you. Or you can ask them for a referral to a local garage that does the work as another option. • Don't rush into the buy but make sure you ask them more about the transmission. Where it came from, what type of vehicle, again ask if it was used, salvaged, if it has fluid buildup around the gasket and any outside appearance damage that they noticed. Inspect your choices before making a payment for a used transmission. • Many reputable salvage yards may offer a warranty. If so negotiate one if possible. Even if it is only for 30 days that should give you enough time to inspect what you expected from the used transmission you purchased from them. Prior to the warranty expiring you may also want to take it to another garage to have it inspected or by someone else in the know that you trust. Buying a used transmission can have its benefits, but you have to be aware that you are buying a used transmission and making sure you are dealing with a reputable hopefully longstanding or multi-generational family owned salvage yard typically means that they are doing it right and should give you some piece of mind. Tips • When you buy something or anything used there are always risks involved. But if you follow the steps above and deal with someone reputable you should be in good shape. Remember it's your money and their reputation at risk.
